Understanding LCIS and its management options.
Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS) is a non-invasive condition that indicates an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Unlike invasive breast cancer, LCIS is not considered a cancer itself but rather a marker that suggests closer monitoring may be necessary. At Garden Mammography Center, we provide specialized services to help you understand and manage LCIS effectively at our Lake Success location.
LCIS is characterized by abnormal cells found in the lobules of the breast. While it does not typically cause symptoms and is not considered breast cancer, having LCIS increases the risk of developing invasive breast cancer in either breast later on. Women with LCIS are often advised to have regular breast cancer screenings and check-ups.
LCIS usually does not present any noticeable symptoms, which is why it is often discovered incidentally during routine screenings or biopsies for other conditions. Unlike invasive breast cancer, LCIS does not form a lump that can be felt. Regular mammograms are essential for early detection and monitoring.
LCIS is typically diagnosed through a breast biopsy. During this procedure, a sample of breast tissue is examined under a microscope to check for abnormal cell growth in the lobules. Advanced imaging techniques such as mammography or MRI may also be used for further evaluation.
Management of LCIS primarily involves close monitoring, including regular clinical breast exams and mammograms. Some women may opt for increased surveillance, while others might consider preventive options such as medication or prophylactic mastectomy, depending on individual risk factors. At Garden Mammography Center, our team will work with you to develop a personalized management plan.
